Back-to-School Safety Tips
Florida’s sales tax holiday marks one of the first signs summer is just about over in the Sunshine State. The start of school is a few short weeks away and it’s time to think about what you and your children will need for another successful school year. Schools have an obligation to provide a reasonably safe environment for students, which includes proper supervision, maintaining safe premises, and adhering to all relevant rules and regulations. Learning should not be disrupted by an accident but school-related personal injuries are all too common.
Common Injuries at School
If your child travels by school bus, safety when they’re boarding and exiting is crucial. A school bus accident could occur because of a bus driver or school district employee’s negligence. The school district may be at fault for an accident if they didn’t provide proper training to the bus driver or if they didn’t keep the bus in proper working order.
Pedestrian safety includes teaching children to use designated crosswalks and obey traffic signals while avoiding distractions like smartphones. Remind children to look both ways before crossing the street, make eye contact with drivers and crossing guards, and use sidewalks when available.
A slip and fall is common because there is ample opportunity for an accident to occur on school grounds, namely, in the cafeteria, classrooms, and gyms. Slippery or uneven surfaces as well as debris, cracked pavement, and broken or damaged stairs and railings can be found throughout school property. Schools have a duty to keep the premises safe and correct any dangerous conditions.
Most playgrounds provide plenty of space for exercise and social interaction. Unfortunately, not all playgrounds are in safe working order and some even pose a serious threat to the children who regularly play on them causing injuries.
